Description
Action founded on the safe place statute, for personal injuries sustained when plaintiff fell 15 or 20 feet while painting
overhead steelwork in a building being constructed by defendant Klug and Smith Co., principal contractor, for defendant Continental
Can Co., owner. Plaintiff was an employee of Brant & Nielsen, to whom the painting work was sub-contracted. The steelwork to be painted consisted of horizontal I beams or purlins about eight feet apart, between which at intervals
were laid angle irons from which lighting fixtures were to be suspended. The angle irons were about one and one-half inches
wide on each side, and one-quarter inch thick. Each end of the angle iron was rested on the flange of an I beam, and was supposed
to be secured so that it would not slip off. For this purpose the end of the angle iron was fitted with a friction clamp having
jaws which fitted above and below the horizontal flange of the I beam. These jaws could be brought together to grip the flange
firmly, by tightening a bolt between the jaws outside the flange. The angle irons were installed by Uihlein Electric Company,
            another sub-contractor.
